Dual-Purpose Camaro Surfaces Ahead of Geneva Motor Show

Chevy sent sports car enthusiasts into a frenzy this week when it posted a series of teaser shots featuring an all-new Camaro Track Concept on its European Facebook page. Mercifully, we didn’t have to wait long to get the real scoop on the new car, because the full reveal took place today, ahead of its planned reveal at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, which kicks off March 9.

The greener-than-green Camaro Track Concept is pretty much exactly what it sounds like. Designed to slot somewhere in the middle of the Camaro lineup, this car features a number of upgrades to make it a formidable track car. Power comes from a 6.2 liter V8 producing 453 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque, backed up by an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Additional engine, transmission and differential cooling systems keep things cool for track use. The suspension sits roughly 1.18-inch lower than a stock Camaro and uses specially-tuned magnetic-rheological shock absorbers, springs and stabilizers. The Track Concept features a new electronic locking differential as well. Chevy claims the car will do over 1g on the skidpad.

Brembo six piston calipers and 14.6-inch rotors slow things down in a hurry. They’re wrapped in a set of Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tires – 285/30ZR20 in the front and 305/30ZR20 in the rear. Those meats are wrapped around glossy, black 20-inch wheels — 10 inches wide in the front and 11 inches out back.

A number of aerodynamic enhancements aid handling, including a new front splitter, side skirts, rear diffuser and three-piece spoiler. The racing theme continues inside, where Recaro racing buckets, knee padding and a flat-bottom steering wheel reside.

We don’t yet know how much the Camaro Track Concept will cost. But it represents yet another corner carving version of Chevy’s venerable muscle car. Buyers will certainly have plenty of choices when it comes to high-performance Camaros moving forward. And that’s never a bad thing.
