New 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe figures to maintain its stranglehold on the big SUV market with a host of updates

The 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe is the latest in a long line of incredibly popular SUVs from the Bow Tie brand. And it ushers in a vastly updated version of the brand’s longtime best-selling utility, with new and attractive styling and a host of additional features in a big(ger) package. All of these improvements only enhance what was already a segment leader, making for a vehicle that once again sets the gold standard for big SUVs, according to the Detroit Free Press.

As DFP points out, the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe is 6.7 inches longer than the outgoing model. It also has a new independent rear suspension that improves ride quality considerably. But that big change also results in more space for third row passengers, which is often a place where no reasonably sized human wants to sit.

After a day of tooling around in the new ‘ute, DFT noted that the independent rear setup “provides a remarkably smooth ride.” Its test model, equipped with the adaptive air suspension and 22-inch wheels, “devoured speed bumps like breakfast burritos and was quiet at highway speed.” It also has plenty of power when equipped with the optional 6.2-liter V8 that produces 420 horsepower. And despite its size, the new Tahoe proved “easy to maneuver,” thanks to its nicely tuned steering.

As is often the case these days, pricing can vary greatly. And that’s certainly the case with the new Tahoe. Prices start out at $49,000 for a rear-wheel-drive, 5.3-liter V8 model and rise to $80,000 plus for the tester’s 6.2-liter four-wheel-drive High Country, which is loaded to the gills.

And as we’d expect, the tester’s interior is worthy of such a price tag. “The Tahoe High Country’s interior sets a new standard for Chevy trucks, with leather seats, soft materials everywhere you’re likely to lean or touch, and industry-leading controls and connectivity,” DFP said. They also note that the climate, audio, and navigation controls are “refreshingly easy to use.” In fact, the only thing they didn’t like was the faux wood trim.

GM dominates the mass market, big SUV segment, as the Tahoe and Suburban account for roughly 50% of sales in this hotly contested area. Throw in the GMC Yukon, and that number jumps to around 70%. And given the host of welcome improvements present on the new model, GM’s stranglehold on the market doesn’t figure to end any time soon.
