Is a Corvette SUV in the Works?

GM CEO Mary Barra talks about Corvette-inspired SUV during GM third-quarter earnings call.

The prospect of a Corvette inspired SUV is a bit of an odd one, but it’s not one we are against. With Ford recently announcing the electric Mustang-inspired SUV, it doesn’t seem like a far stretch for GM to step into a similar mindset. Though we can’t entirely speculate what a Corvette SUV would look like, it’s interesting to think about.

According to the Detroit Free Press, the standing GM CEO Mary Barra was asked about the idea. Unfortunately, we got a very politically stale response.

“I appreciate that you think our Corvette franchise is very strong,” said Barra, deflecting the question and moving on from it.

Is a Corvette SUV in the Works?

There have been plenty of concept renderings of C8 Corvette based wagons and SUVs. The “shooting brake” styling doesn’t look too bad on the C8; we have to admit.

Though, more likely than a Corvette based SUV would be a performance version of one of the current SUV options. Something along the lines of the classic Trailblazer SS would certainly not be frowned upon from our end. Carbuzz posted earlier this year about a Chevrolet “confirmation” of a hot SS version of the new Blazer. However, keen-eyed readers will note the date it was posted is April 1st. Additionally, one of the tags associated with the post is “April Fool’s day.” Though, it does seem like many people missed the joke and now have their hopes up.

The development of the C8 Corvette took years, and due to the recent UAW strike, the production of them is delayed. However, with the release of the new mid-engine masterpiece so recent, we can’t imagine Chevy is in any rush to make anything other than some more powerful versions of the new chassis.

So, while the idea of a Corvette based SUV isn’t a bad one, it isn’t too likely. Though, a few years down the road, it may become a different story. For now, we’ll just be appreciative of what we have and enjoy the fantastic new Corvette.
