Homegrown Chevy Pre-Runner Smokes Tires at Hoonigan Garage

By -

This is ten pounds of awesome crammed into a five-pound Silverado box.

If you think you think you know how to build a truck, you should watch this video and see how much there is to learn. In this episode of Hoonigan’s Daily Transmission we get to meet Kevin Terry and his custom Silverado-based pre-runner. Kevin, who is apparently a fabrication ninja-wizard, built this entire truck by himself. With zero computer design help no less. This is old-fashioned measure, measure, cut construction and it looks phenomenal.  Kevin did use a jig to help keep things around the engine square and properly sized, but he built the jig too.

The entire truck is a custom tube-frame chassis build, and there are lots of additions and changes from a traditional truck of this style. Kevin has kids, so he added seating for three in the back, all with harnesses, bringing total seating space to five.

To make getting those kids in and out of the truck a little easier, there are no door bars for the roll cage. Instead Kevin raised and reinforced the floor to add the required rigidity. That means that the stock Chevrolet doors work exactly as they did from the factory. Oh, and in a nod to comfort, there are custom padded upholstery panels in the roof, mounted between all the cross bars.

The truck itself is powered by a cammed LS2 6.0L V8 and Kevin claims its pushing around 500 horsepower, which is enough to be fun, but with a curb weight well over 5000 pounds, we don’t think anyone would call it fast. It is still plenty of grunt to light up the rear tires when the truck is met with any resistance. So they rolled up to the edge of a loading ramp, stomped the throttle, and filled the world around them with noise and tire smoke. It is a glorious thing.

The rubber got so hot that the excess chunks of tire lying on the asphalt actually caught fire. If you don’t love this angry Silverado, then there is something very wrong with you. Now just press play and enjoy the shenanigans that take place.
