For the exception of three silly years of the Chevy SSR, the Oldsmobile Beretta and the Bravada, the Chevy Camaro has owned the title of Indy 500 pace car for over a decade.

The 2017 Chevrolet Camaro is one bad muscle car, but what happens when you dress it up in a cool livery, add special accessories to it, and put it on a racetrack? You get the Indy 500 pace car Chevy Camaro.

Like the Indycar series itself, the Chevy Camaro fizzled for a few years, but has recently grown in popularity, maturity, and it’s even improved in more than one aspect.

The 2017 Chevy Camaro pace car isn’t any Camaro, it’s a 50th anniversary edition, and it’s packed with lots of eye-catching goodies. It features the RS appearance body kit, a special blacked-out taillight cover, and unique brake calipers and badging with the FIFTY logo on them and unique 20″ wheels. For track safety purposes, this model has been outfitted with a 5-point racing harness and RE Electronics for track communications between safety crews, officials and TV.

Engine performance remains stock, which shouldn’t be a problem given the powerful 6.2 liter V8 which pumps out 455 horsepower. If you’re lucky enough live near the city of Indianapolis, you may find a Camaro with this exactly decal kit for sale, but for most of the country, it’ll be the “plain” 50th anniversary edition Camaro.

Rumor has it that one of these Camaros (there are four) is vin number 001 for the 2017 model. Chevy did not confirm or deny this.

Race on!
