The All-New, Hardcore Chevy Camaro ZL1 is Part Ford

Let’s face it. We live in a globalized world, where car parts and platforms are mere “LEGO blocks” that can be swapped from one vehicle to another. The new Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is a great example of that.

The just-announced Camaro ZL1 will feature a 6.2 liter supercharged V8 developed by Chevrolet Racing, but it’s the 10 speed automatic transmission that will be a direct transplant from another manufacturer. And not just any manufacturer, but their archenemy, Ford. And not just any Ford, but a pickup truck, and not just any truck, but a Ford Raptor! It sounds a bit crazy doesn’t it?

While it’s certainly not the first time these two manufacturers work together on powertrain projects, I simply don’t understand why Chevrolet had to outsource the 10 speed automatic transmission, and not grab an in-home unit and tailor it to the ZL1’s needs. After all, Chevrolet can pull from the Z06, SS, and CTS-V databases and tweak darn good tranny.

In the end, I’m sure they know what they’re doing, and the ZL1 will be an exquisite high-performance machine nonetheless.

Sorry, Chevy fan boys!
