5.7 TBI to Vortec 5.7
Hello all,
I'm an oldster (but new here) with a 91' K2500 5.7 TBI w/160K. It runs just fine like an old 350 should. I even like TBI; simple ,basic, reliable. I've read the tons of sites for building a Vortec 5.7 and they all seem to go w/max power for this and that budget. One thing in common is they all end up topping the build with a carb. My plan is to acquire a rebuildable Vortec 5.7 96'-02' and build it for reliability and around 320-340 HP. I'm guessing that wouldn't be a super tuff' thing to do but have a couple of questions; One, I live in an area w/NO emissions testing req. so I'm guessing one reason for the carburetor to eliminate all the sensors e.g. MAP. TPI, ICV etc. I don't mind the original Vortec fuel system as it should support 300-340 HP. Would going to a carb make a switch a lot easier? And Two, will the Vortec fit right in where the TBI 350 lives now? It has a 4L60 trans and it will have headers.
The primary reason for a "spare" engine is you can only get so much out of a TBI L05 350 without great expense and trouble and a Vortec makes 260-280 HP at the get-go w/ even just a stock rebuild. Not to mention there's a ton of them out there. I'm thinking this is a common subject and any response to my "wordy" "run-on" post will greatly be appreciated.
BTW Where I live in SW Utah, Dodge's outnumber Ford and Chevy pick-ups by 3-1. Have never found out why.
