keyless entry questions 1998 Chevy Silverado K1500
Hi there. I'm new to this forum,
I have a 1998 Chevy Silverado K1500 4x4 pickup, power window, power locks ect.
I have a low-med low end OBD2 scan tool...
How do I know if my truck came with and has a remote or key fob option available for it? Can someone please tell me where to look for a code and what codes I'm looking for? And where the power lock/key fob module would be if there is one?
And if anyone has part numbers for the needed parts that would be awesome!
I appreciate any information that you can help me with.
Thank you

What you need to do is take a picture of the RPO codes that are in the glove box, and then go to an online RPO decoder and see if you were equipped with remote start.
I use this decoder: https://decoderpo.com/
From looking at the RPO codes for my son in law's 2008 Denali with remote start on the key fob, in 2008 (10 years later), the RPO code for that feature is AP3. Most of the codes on his 2008, my 2006 and my 1996 for similar features start with a similar letter. For example, Jxx is always the code for the brake configuration, Gxx is the rear axle code, Kxx includes the alternator and other stuff.
So I think you will want to grab all the codes in the glovebox that start with A, and punch them into the RPO decoder.
If it was equipped with this from the factory, you are likely to be able to get a FOB and get it programmed for your vehicle. If not, I doubt at this point in time, 26 years later, that you will be able to find the necessary modules for the truck side of things. GM certainly doesn't sell a lot of the parts I want for my 1996 anymore. There are probably 3rd party remote start options however, or at least used to be.
