What would make my 97 k1500 z71 4×4 shifts hard from 1st to 2nd. It only seems to do it after I've been on the highway for a while. Once I get off the highway is when it starts. Then I can shut it off for 30 minutes or so and get back in it and its back to normal operation

I am far from a transmission expert, but that part where you mention let it sit for 30 minutes makes me wonder if it is a temperature issue. I don't imagine the transmission is overheating, but I wonder if as it has aged, the solenoids, valves or any other transmission wizardry is not pleased when you get it up to temp.
