2006 sierra 2500hd lbz duramax, extended cab long bed, 1 piece aluminum driveshaft, 150k miles. Stock besides efi live tune, lift pump, and 4” exhaust. Recently, when reversing into a parking spot i’ve heard what almost sounds like a rubbery/dry rotational squeak/squeal that sounded like a bad u-joint. (ONLY IN REVERSE) Sure enough, the u-joint going to the rear end had slight play so I replaced all 4 u-joints (2 on rear, 2 on front) Reinstall everything, sound still occurs. I have my old man hop in the truck and slowly let off the brakes in reverse while i’m under the truck and pinpointed the noise coming from the transfer case. I drain the fluid that i had filled maybe a year ago and it was already black/burnt smelling. Any ideas as to what could be going on? I know about the pump rub issues and this is a manual transfer case. Also, I pulled the rear driveshaft back out and when shining a flashlight into the transfer case where the yolk slides in, behind the rubber seal i could see a metal ring that looked scored and roughed up. Could it be that the ring i’m referring to has worn down and only makes noise in reverse because the driveshaft is spinning in the opposite direction? Any help would be appreciated, never opened one of these transfer cases up and would like any insight. Thanks
