Question Leak in heater connector

The heater connector connected to the wall of the truck has been leaking and the tube was worn out. Had finally gotten a new hose and connector and on the connector are teeth on the inside that are supposed to connect to the outer ring where it latches on, but it won't latch one bit. Even tried getting a hammer and screwdriver and kind of hitting it in so it could connect but it hasn't. Pretty low on coolant and the truck is still drivable, but when i popped open the hood it smelled like coolant. (Hella bad) Even that they have been replaced is it supposed to smell like coolant or no? I wouldn't want to overheat my baby and have her on the side of the road. Any feedback would be appreciated ya'll
