temp gauge goes crazy when a/c is on

temp gauge goes crazy when a/c is on
what would cause the temp gauge to go crazy causing check gauges light to come on in a 2001 astr. it only does this when the a/c is turned on. turn the a/c off it quits. any help would be appreciated.
