Default 96 chevy problem

installed a stereo in my corsica today, well now the dashboard doesn't light up the way it did before, the stereo was a pain to install, first the factory radio wouldn't let the wires go, so we had to snip them all, then Chevy for some odd reason did wires that were the same, like 2 yellows, 2 blacks, 2 browns. Made no sense, installed the thing, wound up having to connect it to the constant so now I have to turn it off everytime I get out of the car, and as stated the dash doesn't work, any ideas what could be wrong with it? The **** that operates the dimmer still turns the top light on, but the dash board won't light up at all.

The radio wires are on a plug that goes into the radio. There is a wire that goes on and off with the key and another one that stays hot all the time for the memory in the radio. You should use a meter to find which wires do what. Then you have the speaker wires and sometimes a wire to raise and lower the antenna. You should only use the wires that are connected to that plug. You obviously wired something wrong since the problem started after the radio as installed. Look at everything again and take your time.

We checked the wiring 3 times. The accessory wire turned out to for some reason not be the accessory wire, so it was taped off, we had to hook to accessory wire from the system with the constants from both, that was the only way that it would work, the system had power to it when the wiring was done according to the manuals, but it wouldn't actually work.

Put your meter between ground and 1 wire at a time with the key on and off to find the one that switches on/off. Usually it is a red wire for the 12 volt on/off and yellow for 12 volt constant on. Black for ground and blue for power antenna.
