Default Water Pump on 2000 Cavalier

My coolant was leaking all over the place so I brought it into the mechanic. They just called saying it was the water pump and to replace it would cost around $1,000. Anyone have any experience with this? I did some research about the water pump and realize it's in a really difficult spot which requires several hours of labor. How many hours would you expect this job to take by experienced mechanics and how much would you reasonably expect the job to cost?

Thanks is advance!

Don't know, I do my own wrenching, seems a little excessive though for bare pump.

Its not a hard job to do. Half a Saturday with beer, less with out. Just a lot of stuff to remove to get to the real part of the job. Pump is cheap, less than $35 i think. Well worth the effort to do it yourself. Only hand tool work from above and below so jack stands are needed. Oh and a computer to print a belt diagram for your car. Its amazing how it snakes around in there.

Well, pump for $35, coolant $12, that leaves you with $953 pay for your work. Even if you need to buy some tools it still is way above average day's pay.
