Default 2008 Equinox Airbags???

My husband hit a fire hydrant and a utility pole last Friday in our 2008 Equinox going about 35mph, and the airbags didn't deploy. The guy at the body shop said that the reason the airbags didn't deploy is because my husband wasn't wearing his seatbelt! I have never heard of such. I know that the passenger one didn't deploy because nobody was sitting in the seat. But for the driver side airbag not to deploy when in a head on collision. I was just looking to see if anyone knew anything about the airbags????

Welcome to the forum. That person at the body shop obviously misspoke. The SDM does consider the state of the driver seat belt switch but not in that way. Without the seat belt on, it's supposed to deploy the air bags sooner than later (or not at all). However, based on the input from the front end sensors of which there are two, it must have determined that the deceleration rate did not peak enough to warrant the air bag deployment. BTW, I didn't realize there are still some that don't wear seat belts.
