What you have is called dieseling. It is kind of rare for a fuel injected car but can happen. Cheap gas can cause it. A leaky injector with a high carbon buildup in a cylinder can cause it among other things.

This is one reason cheap gasoline, isn't so cheap if one owns a vehicle long enough. The additive packages in cheap gasoline are inadequate to sustain things like fuel injectors in a clean enough way for long-term use.

I used to sell fuels, so I know a thing or a few dozen or more about them. The only alternative is to use Techron or other fuel additives to combat carbon build-up, varnish, sludge, and many more things that come with the use of cheap fuels (and inferior lubricants) that have very poor fuel detergent and/or carbon-cleaning packages.

One pays at the pump, or at the automotive repair shop, as we used to say. TANSTAAFL (There ain't no such thing as a free lunch) unfortunately, although it may seem so, until things go south. I don't mean to demean anyone here by my written words. I am simply telling the truth about what happens when vehicles use inferior products.

With Gas Direct Injection (GDI) engines, it will be even worse for anyone using cheap gasoline, then with carbureted or intake manifold injected engines, needless to say. A bottle of Techron Complete may well end the dieseling in the OP's motor. I have no association with Chevron USA, as I have been out of the biz for over 20 years, but Techron does work greatly to diminish carbon deposits.
