This is definitely something you can replace yourself.
It is located under the driver's seat, under the carpet. You'll need to remove the driver's seat and pull back the carpet to reveal the battery. It is mounted to the floorboard with three nuts. No special procedure is necessary when changing it - just unplug the old one and plug in the new one.
I've attached instructions from the service manual below.

The part number is 88861257 for all 2007-2009 Equinox/Torrent vehicles equipped with OnStar. You should expect to pay around $110 from your local dealership, but you may be able to get it for around $80 (including S&H) from an online GM parts wholesaler.
