eng-1 fuse keeps blowing

When I turn the key all the way over the eng-1 fuse blows. This has been happening since I hit a pot hole. It may be a shorted wire but this fuse runs to a lot of things. How can I track this down, or does anyone know of a better way to find it? There are no codes showing.

Unhook the things that it supplies, process of elimination. With key on, individually reattach the electrical connections.

It blows when the starter is turned over. After that the starter keeps turning but the engine does not crank.

Starter relay?swap with same, from other circuit that's not needed to run

I pulled the starter and fuel pump relay out and as soon as the key is turned all the way over it blows the fuse.

geo1 September 16th, 2018 1:09 PM

All the way over,to start"crank"so run is ok?

rubberpanman September 16th, 2018 1:11 PM

Alright, so now I noticed that the fuse is blowing as the key is turned on period. It does not have to be turned all the way to the right.

Gotya,so,unplug every fuse and relay, using photo from phone for reassembly,as mentioned above, isolate, then, reinstall till fuse blows

And, what year, etc. is the vehicle,I'll get in the book, otherwise, AutoZone has many electrical diagrams, they and all data are same, the latter is a paid for service, much more info

rubberpanman September 16th, 2018 2:03 PM

I've got all o2 sensors, evap purge solenoid, cam shift position sensor, crankshaft position sensor, and mass air flow sensor unplugged and the fuse still blows.

Replace the ignition switch.

It is a 2000 chevy express 3500 with 5.7 engine

Also, that is fuel pump relay power, disconnect?

It's the fuel pump relay under the hood and it is disconnected.

rubberpanman September 16th, 2018 2:30 PM

When the key is on it says check gages and the battery light is on.

geo1 September 16th, 2018 3:00 PM

Last post, key on,normal, looking further, that fuse powers relay center,so back to pulling relays,or inspecting wires leaving relay center, and the sensors you mentioned above, power comes from pcm,so the problem is before that, except o2 heater circuit

It sounds possible. When I hit the pothole the van cut off and I had a hard time controlling the vehicle.

Can't find in book, does that 5.7 have a oil pressure sending unit on side of block,3 wire connector, disconnect that for a test,on older models it's tied into fuel pump,12v is there, and if it internally grounds, problem

The one I found is on the back of engine block and has one wire. I unplugged it and still the same thing.

rubberpanman September 19th, 2018 2:31 PM

Alright, today my van is cranking up no problem. I think some wiring got wet some how. I put a new hose clamp on radiator in case it is leaking under pressure. I did notice a wiring harness going into the transmission (which is a 4l80e) that is leaking fluid into the electrical connector. It's possible that the plug dried out when it was disconnected.

Nice catch,on the road to recovery

you might want to post a new question in the Silverado section instead of vans
