1993 G20 - Leaks! Replacing the door seal (weatherstrip)
As we're currently experiencing a very heavy rain storm in Portland, OR, it's become very apparent that I'm going to have to replace some of the seals and weatherstripping on the two front doors, their windows, and the windshield. I knew this was something I would want to take care of eventually when I bought her, but with this heavy rain and seeing the amount of water coming in, I'm very concerned about getting it done sooner rather than later. Does anyone have a good source for finding an OEM door seal? (just where I'm starting, planning to replace all of the above.) Or recommendations for aftermarket replacements that perform well?

You will want to go to a glass shop to have them price changing the windshield seal. When I had the windshield replaced on my 1991 Dodge van two years ago they didn't change the seal and it leaked a LOT when driving. I had them pull the glass out and urethane it like crazy to fix that.

Does anyone know if there isa marked difference in the quality or performance between OEM weatherstripping and aftermarket? I’m asking for the driver’s side door, in this case. The two aftermarket brands I’ve seen offered the most are Fairchild and Metro.

So we replaced the driver's side front door's weatherstripping last weekend and it seemed pretty good, although it did seem too thick/dense for the door compared to the old stuff that was on there. Fast forward to this week and I noticed that part of what was on the bottom section got pretty badly mangled somehow. It looks like the way that it is seated on the door, somehow it was getting caught between the door and the body (see photo below.)
Does anyone have a suggestion of how to fix this and/or how to keep it from happening moving forward? So far, we put some more weatherstripping adhesive under it and are leaving it to cure for 24 hours. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/chevrol...577dec1c60.jpg |
this is the unfortunate downside of owning a vehicle that's almost 30 years old. Things fatigue, sag .... deform. Just like us :D
I'm willing to bet your door hinges are all tired out. What does the alignment of the latch and striker look like? |

It does the same thing in the same spots on the passenger side, where we haven’t replaced the weatherstripping yet. |
Sometimes the hinge bushings will wear and allow the door to sag and lose a good seal. The bushings are available separately, but it can be a PITA to replace them,,,sometimes.!
Body shops come across these problems all the time and they will have a glass place do the glass repair if necessary to repair some serious leaks Adjusting the door position will sometimes help depending on what is the problem. |

Although that worn/patina area when the bottom front door connects with the body has me thinking you may be right. I’m taking her in to replace and reseal the windshield next week and they’re supposed to do an all-over leak test (body too), so maybe that will help suss out the problem. I will say the new weatherstripping has vastly improved the leak, but if the hinges or bushings are bad, that will likely to continue to get worse over time, correct? |
