Auto Downshifting

Auto Downshifting
I have a 99 GMC One Ton. I sometimes carry alot of weight. When I'm going down a long steep hill I will slow way down and downshift into 2nd or even 1st. Is it hurting the transmission any. I have the 480L transmission. Any feedback or advice would be great. Thanks.

Hi lowred1,
Welcome to the Chevy Forums.
If you are referring to the 4L 80E
transmission, they are pretty tough,
and with reasonable care should
be able to withstand quite a bit of abuse.
IIRC, this tranny is the new darling of
the THM400 family.
While hard downshifting on a regular basis
should be avoided, the tranny should shrug
off the occasional hard shift, here and there.
