Default Engine lacks power

HI.
My 1997 Chevy Express 2500 is sluggish up hills and sometimes stutters.
1997I have replaced my fuel filter, air filter, spark plugs and oil.
Could this be a timing issue? I was told that the computer governs the timing.
Any Ideas for a solution?
Is this the right place to ask?
Thanks

Could be a lot of things, including timing.
Instead of throwing parts, run tests.
Measure fuel pressure. Use a diagnostic tool to check fuel trims and ignition retard.
Measure cat back pressure.
Look for arcing. Look under the dizzy cap, etc.

It would help if you told us which engine you have and how many miles are on the thing.

A 1997... so probably a lot of miles eh?
Could be time to do a compression test as well.

Just 144k miles and just passed smog 1st try, so I assume there are no compression issues.
Much appreciated.

Last one I had do that needed a MAP sensor. Gotta get a scan tool on there and look at the live data.

Default Loss of power uphill and stutter

Hi I am still struggling with my 1997 Chevy Express 2500 van. She loses power up hill and also stutters sometimes..
She has 144k on the clock and just passed smog easily. I have replaced air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs and oil. I took it to a local mechanic whose diagnostic tool said there was an issue with mass air flow sensor. I replaced that but the issue persists.
The mechanic then said it could be a transmission problem, but it was rebuilt 3 months ago.
I am so frustrated (and broke) after failing to pinpoint the problem.
Could it be the computer/ECM? Current one looks a little corroded after visiting Burning man where the dust is highly acidic.
Thank you in advance
Seani

Tried any of these yet?

what kind of an issue?

the sensor was probably fine, and it was giving you clues about the actual source of the problem. Shame on that mechanic. He probable got a nice payment for that. I hope you put another OEM one in.

He has no idea what he's doing. Run away!
