Unhappy HELP! Driving cross country and water pump is leaking.

Hello all,

Thanks for checking my post. I have a 1990 GMC Rally STX 5.7 L van I am currently driving across country. I noticed a slow coolant leak during my daily checks on the van. I found it coming from the water pump, dripping slowly from a gasket screw. It only drips while running and only leaves a puddle about the size of a couple quarters. I haven't had any overheating problems.

My question: Should I try to replace the water pump while on the road or will hold out for continuous driving for about a week over 2,500 miles? I don't have the cash to pay a mechanic but I have the parts and I have done most of the work on my van. I know this one involves removing a lot of parts to get to the water pump and I am worried about attempting this job at a campsite and rather do it in a garage at least.

What are your thoughts? Should I risk the drive or does it sound it like failure is imminent and I should replace it today? I Can supply photos if that will help.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
