if you are turning the crank with a ratchet, then use a shishkabob skewer (or something else clean that wont scratch) and stick it in the #1 cyl once the cyl pushes air on your finger, that allows you to pinpoint the tdc, then do the distributor again, but when u drop it, u will notice it doesnt drop to the bottom (it will sit up 1/4") now turn the vehicle over and watch the dizzy drop the last 1/4", once the cap is on, get the dizzy cap lined up too, this should work for you

on a late model van the flat part of the cap will line up with back intake port its almost flat too they will be parallel the rotor must point at no 1 pin in cap yo can set timing with a scan tool if its a good one, should be about 30 degrees advance running
be sure u are on compression stroke you mah have to turn oil pump shaft to aligh dist shaft thundermug

1. remove plug for cylinder #1. insert a pencil into the spark plug hole, a long pencil.
2. turn motor by hand waiting for the pencil to be ejected as much as it can be, this is TDC #1 cylinder. Line up distributor to #1 position, put rotor on, insert carefully back into block taking care not to turn the distributor left or right more than 1/8 of a turn. Hold the rotor with a finger while you slide the cog back into the cam gear.
3. Put on hold down bolt but dont tighten, you may have to adjust the distributor to get the rpm advance right.
4. PULL OUT PENCIL, replace plug. Turn it over. If you were not at TDC #1, then you ll have to pull out the distributor and turn the motor 180 degrees.
5. Valve timing is easier to do if you remove the valve cover.
