NEW HERE: Going from 4Runner to Express?
Hi all, new here. I am considering going from my beloved 4runner to an Express with 4x4 or AWD. If there are any good threads that would help me, please point in that direction.
If I buy a van with 60k miles, what can I realistically get from it?
We go skiing and road trip quite a bit, so with the growing family I think the Express is a good choice. I have looked at the Ford Econoline, Sprinter, Transit, etc... but the Express seems to be the most reasonable and more straight forward van.
Thoughts?

- AWD Express vans were made from 2003-2014. Only in the 1/2 ton 1500 model. Depending where you live, they can be challenging to find. Works great in the snow.
- Part-time 4WD was never an option. There are after market companies that convert them, but those vans typically sell for absurd amounts of money.
- If you look after it, and you don't live in rust state, they can go for a very, very long time. Hundreds and hundreds of thousands of miles.
- They are pigs on gas. (fueleconomy.gov)
- They are fairly low-tech. That means less luxuries, but more reliable.
- locking rear axle (RPO code G80)
- Rear heat/AC
- Passenger model (has windows all around)
- Sliding door. (easier to get in&out. especially in tight parking spots)

I have a 2006 factory passenger AWD Van, 110K
This vehicle finally convinced my wife too give up the mini-van.
Liked it so much i bought a 2014 AWD when i heard it was last year they would make them; I've got around 45K on it; it's a Waldoch conversion.
I still have both and i recently thought about selling the 2006, but it's got so much utility; I've pulled the seats out and put dirt bikes in there, 25 bales of hay, the amount of stuff it can do has almost made me sell my truck. The 2014 conversion is like driving your living room.
Both are great vehicles in snow / rain / even mud. I've pulled a livestock trailer through a wet muddy pasture with bull and heifer in it; a guy in a pickup decided if i could do it he would, he promptly got stuck; i don't know what is with the AWD Express, but it seems to go through anything, I've had expeditions, pickups, equinox and i will always take the AWD Express over any of them when it comes too snow, maybe the weight of the darn thing, though it's like driving a sail boat across KS, watch the winds. It's done everything I've asked of it, including towing a ford 4000 through the ozarks.
Both mine are low tops, as i need to stay under 7' for different reasons (garages, down town parking in kansas city etc).
2006 did have the door hinge sieze up, not cheap, but delaer replaced for 800, looks new and you'd never know except "the style of the hinge" is different on the one side, pitfalls of not oiling the hinge and living on dirt / gravel roads. Normal problems, nothing out of ordinary, my 2006 has gone through two front tie rods on passenger side. I've had almost all work done at dealer at defined intervals. Gas mileage is worse on the 2014 waldoch conversion, avg 14, my older 2006 averages 16.
If you have the $$, i love the new AWD Transit, just saw a Waldoch conversion of it in Minnesota.
You can still find the AWD express but they are rare and keep a higher price.
Also my 2014 is white, no paint problems.
