Replace the spare tire entirely with a few cans of fix a flat?
I know all the Sportsmobile versions have entire bumper assemblies with swing out tire carriers, ladders etc. Mostly on fords tho. And not cheap.
What if you welded a plate of steel inside the door like the plywood I mentioned? You could use 1/4" flat stock, and even tap the plate to receive bolts , or weld some nuts on the inside to make it easy to mount your jeep rig. Yank that door skin off to see what I mean.

I did see a tire carrier that was for sale, the seller described it to be designed for our vans. Sorry, I thought of the thread, but it wasn't fresh enough for me to post the details. If I see it again, I'll post here.

GOFOAD...!! I think I found something perfect. I saw it on a econo today, but looks like it might work perfect on our vans... Maybe with a slight mod. I'll post the photo I shot of it later ( can't do from my phone? )

Why?
Do you need to carry a spare tire? I've never used the spare of my '97 conversion van. The last flat tire I can remember was about 15 years ago: my wife ran over a spark plug but got home and in the garage before it went flat.

Continental Tyre Carrier
My Chevy Roadtrek has their Continental Spare Trye Carrier.
It mounts on an extra offset tow hitch receiver.

So I saw this on a ford and got to thinking that it's so simple that it could be adapted to fit our doors. Or use this idea to fab your own. I like the idea of the mounting points being on the aperture of the door, vs right in the middle of the weak sheet metal. Maybe even have 4 contact points instead of 3...The one pictured below may have wrap around tabs that loop around to the back, but they could be cut off to fit our non hinge doors... ( as long as fitment width works) Unfortunately the van owner had no clue about the origins. :-(
