Default What is under the carpet between driver and passenger seats?

Hi all,

I'm in my first month of ownership of a 2011 Express AWD van and am loving it so far.

One thing I've noticed - there seems to be a box of some sort between the driver and passenger seats, right in the middle of the van, and right where I step when heading to the back to help my kids buckle up. Do you have this in your van as well? If so, what is it? I haven't attempted to peel back the carpet yet to check it out - thought I was ask to see if somebody knew first. I'm wondering if I can move it to the side so it is out of my foot path.

The steel rails that the rear seats hook on to on on top of the van floor. The plastic shrouds that the rod slide into to connect the seats are also on top and molded to the carpet. They put 2 layers of the felt underlay in places to make up for this, but you may feel that through the carpet. If that does not explain it then
i don[t know what you mean....lol

I have felt the rear seat rails and those do stick up a bit under the carpet, but the box seems to be disconnected from the rails and is probably about a foot in front of the end of the rails. From where it is placed it seems like it was an after thought (so maybe aftermarket). If I can figure out how to pull up the front carpet section without ruining it I will do that. I'll post a picture later too of where it is in case that helps. Thanks for the help!

Hopefully you can see in the picture the faint outline of the box just below and behind the center console. Any idea what it is?

Weird. I have no idea. I dod not have that there in my 2002 ls passenger.
Call the dealer and ask. Also, if you pull the passenger seat, you can pull back the carpet better.....(pull the engine cover too)
Maybe it can be relocated under the pass seat.
I cannot think of a single reason for that to be there.

I'm also new to Express vans and have been wondering the same thing as the OP about my '09. I bought mine used from a rental company so there is lots of wear and between the front two seats is the outline of what appears to be a box under the carpet. I figure it might be an access panel to the top of the tranny (?) or maybe the vehicle computer, but I really have no idea.

In my old Astro van that was a heat duct to the back seat.

Ya, this is definitely not a heat duct since it's fully covered by the carpet.

There was a duct under the carpet that ran to vents behind the front seats.
Granted, a 97 Astro is a totally different beast.

Years late to answer, but I found out today what the box is since I had to rip up the wet carpet. It is a plastic cover that encases some wires . I have no idea what they go to
