'01 Tahoe - grinding/rubbing on cold startup
Hey all,
I'm getting the weirdest sound and I'm nervous it's something really bad.
When my truck ('01 LT w/5.3L V8) has been sitting for a few days, and possibly afterone cold night, I get a strange whooshing/grinding/rubbing noise on startup from the engine area. If I immediately shutdown the engine and then restart, no sound - everything then sounds good. Otherwise the truck runs great. It sounds as if something is sticking, but I'm really hoping it's something with the starter and not with the engine internals.
The only other clue I can give is that about the same time I started getting some valve noise for the first 3 to 5 seconds of driving the vehicle if I don't let the engine warmup for a minute or sofirst.
Thanks for any help.

I'm not exactly sure about your scraping noise, though it very well could be the starter failing to disengage.
Your valve noise isn't valve noise. Well, not engine exhaust/intake valve noise. I think its the PCV valve. On some GM Vortec 6 and 8 cyl engines, whe you start it up when its cold, it'll make noises like that and there is a simple fix, but I'll have to look it up.

Check the PCV valve and see if there is anything near enough to tap on it. If not, open the throttle up by hand with the hood open on the cold morning and see if you can locate the noise.
Everyone I think this will solve your problem please look at this link...I believe that this is my problem with my 2002 tahoe...http://www.pistonslap.com/
