Default 2001 Express LT, 5.7L Transmission Filter and Fill required 3.75 Quarts of DEX III

2001 Express 1500 LT, 5.7L, 4L60e, 178K miles

Just replaced the Transmission filter on my 2001 Express.
Some previous replaced things at 110K.

Had to unbolt the exhaust at the header, lower it to get the transmission cover off, is/was this normal ?

We were surprised that as the pan was unbolted and tipped that fluid did not come out of it, fluid level seemed low.

Had a generic filter in it, magnet was dirty, some light gray in the pan, no shavings, fluid was red and smelled ok.

Added some Trans-X High Mileage ( 8 oz) and 3 quarts of DEX III, checked the dipstick. Based on the dip stick it need very little additional fluid.

Shifted the Transmission through all the gears without an issue.
In "N" checked the dipstick again (cold), it needed maybe 1/2 a quart for a total of about 3.75 quarts total for the filter change.

Everything on the net and manual indicates that this change should take 5 quarts.

Does it have the wrong dipstick or do should it be fine with 3.75 quarts ?

..................

With a new filter, plus and about 1/3 of the fluid changed should the diluted fluid be changed/replaced a few times using a pump and the dipstick tube ?
