Default 2005 silverado gear slip

Hi guys,
I have a 2005 silverado LS 5.3L crew cab pickup with a slipping problem. When the pickup is in 2 wheel drive, it slips out of gear like its in neutral. I notice it when its coasting to a slow stop and in reverse. I will then have to put it into Auto 4 wheel drive and it grinds and clunks into a driving gear. If I drive in auto 4 wheel or 4 wheel, I never have a slipping problem and it drives really nice. I do not think it is a transmission problem, but a transfer case problem. Encoder motor or position sensor? I dont know where to begin.

If the tcase was trashed, wouldn't I notice grinding when it slips out of gear? And before it slips in 2wd everything sounds and feels fine.

any messages or codes? I'd drain the fluid and look at it, then look in the drain hole for chunks/shavings and to see if the chain is loose.

Right after I noticed it slip the first time I drained the oil and checked it. It looked fine, and no shavings. No codes or engine lights. Not even a service 4wd.
