3970010… but it’s not a 350?
Random one here that has perplexed me for as long as I’ve owned my C-10;
I’ve got a restored 1971 C10 custom, the original 307 was pulled during restoration and replaced with a 305 from an ‘82 Camaro (as disclosed by the previous owner whom installed the engine)
Odd thing is, it has the 3970010 casting number at the rear of the block-which all documents say is a 350.
However; the engine suffix code on the pad at the front of the block states that it is a 305 cast in St Catherine’s on March 28th, and was put into an ‘82 passenger car w/4bbl Rochester.
Is this a unicorn block? All the documentation I have seen says the 010 was last used in ‘79. I find it hard to believe a 350 mould would have been used 3 years later to cast a 305?!? Especially seeing as the bores would be the wrong size.
I guess the only way to confirm would be to pull the heads, but based on the lack of power, I’m betting it’s a 305, with a whopping 155HP.

That’s the plan eventually, but the 305 doesn’t burn a drop of oil & runs pretty strong (it must've been refreshed before going into this truck).
It is currently plenty of power for cruising around to car shows, and it keeps me outta trouble.
When it gets tired-or if manage to blow it up-it will definitely get a 350 put in its place. 👍🏻
