OK ... really dumb question .... are all GM V6 distributor caps alike?
In other words, will they all "fit" universally?
I have a GM distributor from how knows what. It was adapted to fit a Ford 300 straight six, so I have not ideal what it originally came off of ... thus I have not idea what cap and rotor to get for it.
I need either a part number or a car I can look-up (say on rock auto site) ... maybe a 1980 C20 pickup or ??????
Also, what should I look for in a cap / rotor? On Rock Auto they range form $8.87 to $31.99 ! This is no performance machine. It is a 33 year old truck I use for a daily driver and plowing out the driveway.
I have included a picture of the distributor ... got it of Amazon about 5 years ago (less then $100) ... easy fix for a troublesome Ford ignition ... has worked flawlessly.
I think you answered the question .... all V6 caps (and rotors) from that time period must be the same, not vehicle specific.
Great price on the one in the link ... says brass .... I am guessing that is as good as any other material (I see some say plated steel, others aluminum) ?
Having had vehicles of all makes and models (VW's from the late 50's, Corvairs from the 60's, Firebirds, Buicks, Datsuns, ......) , this ignition has to have been one of the best ideas of GM!
The Ford ignition in this truck was giving me no end of problems. Dropped this in ... one hot wire, a vacuum line (the truck had no advance since someone has stripped out the control box years ago) and I was up and running! Not a problem in the past 5 years.
