automatic trans
ok so every vehicle ive ever owned has been standard trans and i was lookin at a car with a TH350. i know that there are different kinds such as TH400 4L60E and a 700R4 but i dont know the differences or specs of any of em so could somebody be so kind as to help elaborate on the different kinds of automatic transmission. thanks
th350 and th400 are three speed autos. the 700r4 is basically a th350 with a fourth gear, also known as the overdrive gear. the 4l60 trans is the electronic controlled version of the 700r4. the 4l80 is the electronic controlled, 4th gear overdrive version of the th400. most cars and light trucks with 6 cylinder or smaller v8 motors used the th350, while the larger motor cars and heavy duty trucks got the th400. in early 80's, gm began using the 700r4 in some cars and trucks. these used a non lockup style torque converter. heavier trucks still used the th400. the 700r4 went to a lockup style converter, which locks up the plates inside the converter reducing the amount of slippage, and dropping the engine rpm's about 500 rpm's, for better economy and less stress on the converter. the th350 also used a lockup converter in the mid-late 80's, until it was eliminated and replaced completely with the 700r4 lockup style. the mid 90's saw the 700r4 replaced with the electronically controlled version, the 4l60 series. the th400 was also replaced by the 4l80/4l85 which has overdrive and lockup converter as well. as far as 4 speed automatics go, these two trans are what is used in rear wheel drive applications to date.

i was lookin at an 88 monte carlo ss and its got a th350 with a shift kit. i was wonderin how reliable this transmission would be if it was behind a 350? any more wisdom on this subject

if properly maintained and/or built, the th350 is a solid trans. they're cheap to rebuild or buy. extremely common, i dare say the most common. these trans have been used in cars and trucks with great success.
I drive a 85 GMC Vandura and the TH350 quit. Loud clunking and no gears. I got another one that was from a C10 truck but I had to put my locking sensor in the new one. My questions are , will my torque converter work in the new one if I put my locking 4pin wire sensor in? And what are the differences?
