Angry boiled battery

after having ripped out the wiring on my 79 blazer,i had to try and rewire the alternator. its a 3 wire remy delco.i put the batt cable with the sensor cable and attached them both to the main conector (from battery) on the starter. i left the cable meant for the charge light disconected. the battery was earthed to the chasis, the engine was bolted in to the chasis with gearbox attached. the result was one cell on my brand new optima battery got very hot and destroyed the battery!! i didnt think my wiring was that far out, maybe the alternators faulty, although it seemed to work fine before!?
