Buying a Tech2 Diag...

Hello Guys.

I am new to this forum and this is my first post, so if I am posting in the wrong place please forgive me. I'm considering buying a Tech2, by the way I do not own a corvette, yet. I will be using it only on vehicles earlier the 2012, mostly GM, and would like to know it I need to purchase the VIC interface in order to be able to program the various modules?. I have searched the web for info on this, however, all I can find is that it is used as a spare part. (whatever that means). Can someone please give me a little insight on this matter, as well as, what, if any extras should I purchase in order to program/reprogram any/all modules. thanks in advance for any assistance.

This is my advice. Buy an MDI. It's essentially a gateway module that will allow you to communicate with all vehicle with obd2 style DLC. I'm assuming if you are going to programming modules you have access to gm's server to download and transfer files. Then the only thing you need to add is a laptop with Tech2Win software that's available on GM site and you will also be able to communicate with global A vehicles when you download GDS also. This might not be a bad route to go since every vehicle from 2014 and newer is going to be running global A.

But, if you do insist on a Tech2 yes you do need to buy a CANDi module. It's a little (ridiculous) module that acts as a gateway to allow you to communicate with certain vehicles 2005 and up. And Cadillacs 2004 and up I think. But you will also need a RS232 cable to do file download from GM server. I'd check for someone selling this as a bundle. Should be out there. Tech2, CANDi, power cable, and RS232 cable, and software.

Thanks Tech, sounds like good advice. I will do a little more research before I make my purchase, the MDI, from what little I’ve read looks like the way to go for GM, but what about Ford model vehicles, can it be used on those as well? you did not mention any thing about the VCI module, probably because I misspelled it huh, what is it for? all I can find on the net is that it is used as a spare part... have been looking at those cheap china knock-offs, Thanks again for your words of wisdom.

You may step a little out of my realm here just because I've only known GM my whole time. I've only known the tech2 to be able to work on GM vehicles only as well as the MDI. The VCI module you ask of I'm assuming is for the tech2?.... But, it's mostly the brain of the tech 2. It's where the serial data cable plugs in to on the scan tool and the other end to the DLC connector. It's an internal part of the tech2, so yeah I guess a spare part. I don't know if I can help you anymore on your decision. I assumed you were mostly working on/with GM vehicles only. As far as Ford goes I am not sure if the tech2 has different data cards that can be inserted into it to allow for communication with other brands. These cards I speak of are the 32MB cards that plug into the top of the scan tool. I don't know if I can give you anymore direction. Sorry
