Question Engine Identification

Hello, I have an engine block here with the identification number unreadable. The casting number is 3970010. As for the casting number I can not find it. But believe it might be found in different spots. The spots that I have found it in the past. Is there another way to identify the block? Or make the number readable? Thanks
