Default Help decoding engine

I have a 1986 monte carlo with a 350 chevy engine with a edlbrock 1405 carb and intake . I looked up casting #s. Only thing I could find out is that it's from 1969 to 79 and used on corvettes and camaros , I need to check ignion timing get new plugs and gap them how to I time the engine if I don't know what exactly it came from or what yr it is. . Someone told me to check behind alternator for a pad with numbers on it but that pad is smooth no numbers on it only found casting behind drives cylinder head which is why I know it's from 69 to 79. How to I time engine gap plugs. Etc without exact info

That year range covers pre-emission, and emission engines. What kind of plugs? Is this an electronic or point distributor?
