Default i have an 88 gmc k2500 with a 5.7tbi and my timing skipped

so i put in a new cam lifters and chain set. everyone that i talk to said that the timing marks should be 12 and 6 oclock. 12 on the crank sprocket and 6 o'clock on the cam sprocket. i did that and it will run but as soon as i plug in the advance timing it wont start or run. so what should i do?

i have an 88 GMC k2500 with the 5.7tbi i have tried to set the timing on it cause it jumped, i have replaced the timing chain and put a new flat tappet cam with lifters. i set the timing marks like it showed in the book and it showed that the cam sprocket is at 6 o'clock and crank sprocket is at 12 o'clock. i spun the engine over to check to see if i had the marks in the right spot and after spining the engine over to check the timing on the compression strock my marks are both at 12o'clock

Should be the cam is twice the crank, so, setting them at 180 deg apart, they should then align with rotation.
