Issues after water pump replacement. please help!
I replaced the water pump on my girlfriends 2004 cavalier LS sport 2.2 ecotech. I used the special tool to hold the timing chain sprocket but I suspect the timing is off. There is noise coming from the timing chain area now. Not terribly loud but noticeably louder than befire. I also her a whining sound when I rev the engine or take off. There is some white smoke or steam coming from the exhaust. The exhaust is getting excessively hot, I can hear it crackling as it cools after just idling for a few minutes. There is an odd vibration to the engine and lastly the tach seems to be showing higher rpms than normal . The car seems to run well, actually seems to have better acceleration but something seems off on the highway as in higher rpms. Normally about 2k but was 3k rpms. It's only been driven for about 15 minutes. Had none of these problems before. Also I left the thermostat out to do a coolant flush. I had a difficult time lining up the water pump sprocket with the timing chain sprocket to bolt them together . Could I have moved the timing chain ever so slightly even with the special tool holding the sprocket? I suspect the exhaust valves are opening a bit early. Causing the exhaust to get to hot and making the valves push on the cam effectively making the timing chain jump which causes the excess noise and vibration? Hopefully I'm wrong and it's easier fix than having to get at the timing chain. But that would be much easier than having to get back at the water pump. That was not pleasant by any means. :-! I've put alot of time into this car lately and with my daughter returning to school in two days and lack of funds to take it to a shop, any help would be greatly appreciated.
