Default Not charging

Here's one for all the old tech's.
1967 panel van.
Ice cream truck.
292ci inline, 10DN alternator, wires have been played with for years, so it's a mess.
From what I just found out, it seems it hasn't been charging for years.
Not driven much, so they just kept on charging the battery.
Took the alt to test, and it failed.
Replaced and still nothing.
Also got a new reg.
Old style mechanical type.
Tried to jump the field to check if the new alt was good, and nothing.
Could be just another bad alt????
I get batt volts to the Batt terminal on the alt.
I get batt volts to the #3 on the regulator.
I'm thinking of redoing the whole wire system.
Looks like a simple system.
Except this system has a AMP meter and no CHG light.
It has an AMP meter, and I don't see a CHG light.
Would the AMP meter be wired in place of the CHG light???
It also shows a resistance wire from the ACC to the #4 on the regulator.
What is the resistance value????
Plus. the IGN switch has NO ACC position.
How would I wire it with no ACC terminal???

Welcome from Florida. To simplify everything, I would install a 1 wire alternator. I use the Delco 10SI alternator. Built in regulator, easy to wire and works well.

I was thinking about doing that, but no my van.
The guy said someone did work on it.
They installed a rebuilt alt and a new reg.
But I don't think it was ever charging.
Don't want to spend more money.

So decided to go with the conversion to si alt.
Went good, even with all the wiring a mess.
One problem having.
Engine will not turn off.
If I disconnect the wire to the alt, it turns off.
I'm thinking back feed of power.
Any idea what diode it should be????

You need to put a diode in the wire to the alt. You can also put a relay in the line that only supplies 12 volts to the alternator when the key is on. I put the diode in my 1949 Chevy, and it works great.

Didn't have a diode on hand, but I do have some relays.
So I wired a relay to cut connection to the white wire, and it's working fine.
The wiring on this thing is so messed up, it seems like it runs on for a second.
I'm thinking it maybe getting some slight feedback from something else.
I ran new wires for the charging system, just to be sure.
But it does turn off now, so he's happy, I'm happy.
Think, maybe, the compression is so low, it's just turning on it's own.
Thanks for the help.
