Default Replacing master cylinder with Delco/Delphi ABS-VI

1995 Chevy Lumina car, 3.1 engine, Delco/Delphi ABS-VI Brakes. For master cylinder replacement is there a alternate way to release the spring tension in the abs modulator unit (instead of using a scan tool) prior to removing the entire master cylinder/abs assembly? Is releasing the spring tension required if you are only replacing the master cylinder and not disassembling the entire abs unit?
