stalling issues
Hello I have a Cobalt 2006, 4 cylinder, 2.2l coupe that has a stalling issue. When Im driving my car and I come to a redlight or stop sign my car either bogs or stalls, all the lights in the car go dim too prior to the stall. Now this only happens when I brake. after the stall i go to restart my car and everything is up and running fine again. Before this happened also it would just stall without warning and I wouldnt even know it stalled until i try to give it gas..this only happened a few times but hasnt happened in a while. I have took it to autozone to check to see if the battery and alternator was at fault but they are both fine. Another thing is that my check engine light isnt on so i cant take it in to check to see if any codes are available to see what the problem could be. Im afraid one day its just going to die on me when Im driving in traffic and get into a serious accident, please help! I have also got a tune up on it..thinking it could of been the problem and the problem is still happening..
These are the most common things that can make your car stall..hope it helps
1. When a car stalls, the problem is generally with the fuel system or the electrical system of the car. One of the commonest reasons why any car stalls is because the ignition is malfunctioning. Which means the engine is not able to ignite the gas present in the cylinders.
You can check two things here. First, and the most logical thing, is to check whether there is any gas present in the cylinder at all. The second thing that you can do is to check the electrical system of the car.
2. The second problem is that the fuel filter might be clogged, which does not allow the fuel to properly get ignited, causing the car to stall when it is slowing down or stopping. Check this. It is very easy to replace the fuel filter and it is quite cheap too.
You can locate the fuel filter at the rear of the car. You will need to raise the car so you can get under it. Be sure to use safety stands for your protection. The filter will be just in front of the rear axle. Passenger side at the gas tank. Should be a small round cylinder looking can. There should be three fuel lines coming off of the filter.
3. Sometimes the distributor can be a problem. Adjusting the timing of the distributor could help the problem.
4. The Cobalt is fuel injected. Any malfunction there can cause the car to stall too. Just check the injector if it is working fine. You can get a simple device known as a mechanic’s scope to determine if the injector is working fine. It should make a snapping noise when starting; if it does not make any sound, it is probably not working. You can replace the injector yourself too.
5. You can consider changing the wires, plugs, rotors and caps of the distributor. This is a simple thing to do; just make sure you have a couple of hours handy. These parts can undergo wear and tear over time and that would require them to be replaced periodically. In most cases, replacing these parts can take care of the stalling problem.
Well this is about all i know about stalling..hope it helps
