Default 1959

i went to start my dads impala today at first in Park it would not start starter never moved then i pulled it in low gear then it started but the stater stay ingauged so we put a new solnoid on top of the starter then i put it park and gave it a go but the starter didnt even turn so i put in bettween P and R and it started just fine and the starter shut off just like it should so i through it all the way into park then the starter ingauged again does anyone know what i can check now i think something in the coulm is mess up but dont know what?

The starter should only engage in P or N and not in any gear... this is part of the interlock system.
It 's likely your PNP( park neutral position switch ) .

yeah- if its a 59 youre talking about.
there should be a switch that allows starting in park and neutral.
If its starting on others- that switch has probably come looks.
another thing to look at- is to verify that the shift indicator is actually pointing at the correct gear its in.

on late 60 early 70 cars- and if theyre column shifters- they have a little string attached to the needle. this straing is attached to the steering wheel shifter- as the shifter moves- the string is pulled which indicated the position, on these to fis its as easy as loosening a screw and adjust the position of the string.

but look for that safety switch.
