Default Gas gauge needle pointing wrong way

On my Dad's 2004 Impala the gas gauge needle is pointing around the 5-6 o'clock position. I am going to replace the fuel level sensor since I hear that can fix the gas gauge problem but what do I need to do to get the gas gauge needle pointing the right way?

Any tips are appreciated

Have you replaced or unhooked the battery lately?
Try unhooking the negative post and hook it back up.
