Default 1991 K5 Hose attached to the Transfer Case?

I just bought my 1991 K5 Blazer from a buddy of a buddy and the thing has many problems. One thing I noticed is that there is a hose hanging down (appr. 3/4 OD) with what appears to be an air filter attached to one end and the other end attaches to the top of the transfer case. I am not mechanic savvy and Im learning as I go so Im not quite sure what this does or where it goes. I don't see an airbox or anything for the filter to sit on.

Edit: The truck came with a Chiltons and as I browsed through it I couldnt find anything on the hose thinking maybe it had something to do with vacuum pressure for the 4WD.

sounds like it's the breather/vent hose. not sure about the filter, probably somethin someone added for whatever reason. if you can get a good pic or two up, we might be able to see exactly what it is.

Sure thing. The "filter" is most deffinitely aftermarket. Let me go take some pics, hopefully that will help.

Pics taken with my phone. Bad quality but you are able to see what Im talking about.

Real quick, the filter is pretty gunked up. Anything special around the garage to clean it with? And yes, thanks maxx =)
