I'm looking to replace my old non-working mechanical factory speedometer with an autometer electric speedometer in my 1988 K5. Why? because my cable got all chewed up from the excessive torque of my 383 and the needle on the gauge face broke off and I'd like to get a programmable one for ring and pinion ratios and tire sizes. Anyway has anyone done this? How hard would it be to make this work? and wheres the best place to mount the hall effect sending unit?

it did that because it was wore out maybe even rusted inside and getting lots of friction and yes it can be done but theres gear ratios your dealing with thats on the speed sensor on the trans if you dont use the right gear your speedo will read wrong

Well for now I found a temporary fix. My garmin nuvi had a speedo that works off of satellite and is perfectly accurate. I'll use that for now untill I figure out the whole electric speedometer thing.
