Default steering box/pump problem

i got 90' k5 with 33" tires. the truck is around for about two years.
there's a leak from the power steering oil pump at least since then. the leakage is mild so i never got to deal with it. but there's something that bothers me about the truck's steering;
when i start the truck in the morning and try to turn the steering wheel, it resist for a split second and then it budge.
similar phenomenon happens every once in a while, while driving and i began not to trust the steering box anymore. so my questions are:
- can these phenomenons are a direct result of the leakage from the pump, if so, why?
- does the steering box needs a rebuild? is there any way to determine when a steering box needs a fix?

thanks in advance for your thoughts and answers, yarin.

If the pump is leaking, I would start by replacing it. If you still have the same problem then replace the steering box. You don't want to risk the steering locking up.
