I have a buddy who is disowning GM products...Because his '06 malibu keeps eating up steering racks.

He is on his 5th one.

Is there a known issue with faulty steering racks in this model?

What keeps causing the racks to fail?

'04 Malibu LT Here. Have had the same problem over and over again.4 or 5 steering racks or shafts. GM apparently has no permanent fix or is unwilling to admit it's an issue. So lets bail them out and let them build more junk with unresolvable problems.

 

When you refer to eating up steering racks,is the problem a loud thud when turning the steering wheel? If so,the problem is not unique with the Malibu. I own a 2005 Pontiac G6, andit too had the problem... I got it fixed about a year ago for the third time, and it seems to be holding up. They ended keeping my car for a few days, and according to the service comments on the service order, they changed both the rack, and the steering column...

By the way, do you have the variable electric power steering issue? I got a letter in the mail about extending the warranty on the 2005 G6, it says that the power steering is prone to failure and loss of power steering is possible... I dunno, what exactly is the problem there, but I know I've got 7 years extended warranty on the power steering specifically!
