Exclamation Need Help Please

i have a 1999 chevy malibu. well i was driving out in a storm to get home and went through too big of a puddle and the car died on me. i let it sit for a couple hours after i pushed it to dry ground. then i got it started finally and alot of white smoke came out the tail pipe. well now the car is giving me issues and i dont have a code reader to know what is going on with it. right now it idles really high around 1500 when i start it. then i shift it and it seems like it is going to die on me then jumps to 2000 to 2500 RPM and doesnt want to go any lower then that. when i try to shift it is gear it jerks cause it is idling way to high. i have checked the MAS and the throttle position sensor and nothing has changed what the car is doing. i really need this car to help me get to and from work and i need to get it fixed as soon as i can but i dont have the money to be taking it to a shop and having it done there. any help would be greatly appreciated.
