Default n00b with a question

What's up everyone! To get started I have a '64 Chevy II. It has a new 350 small block in it (by new it has about 5,000 miles on it). Anyway, I think I need a new thermostat, perhaps just a flush. I searched to no avail. The temp goes up rather quickly to over 230 degrees and it doesn't seem to want to take any fluid. The car was running last year at about 180. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, I want to get this running again cause I miss my baby on the road.

it sounds like you have an air lock. try taking the rad cap off for the night to let the air come out the top. see if it will take fluid then. also i would change the thermosat as well since its cheap anyway. hope this helps.

Thanks, I actually picked up a thermostat yesterday. I'll definatley will try taking the cap off for a night. If it is still having problems, I'll probably do a flush. Then, if that doesn't work, I'm going to be dumbfunded.
