Just joined the Chevy forum and thought I`d give you some 'Old Guy' history...
Started out with a '59 Impala 2-door Hardtopin 1967.Bored the 283 .60 over to a 292. Bought a set of "Double Hump" 327 heads from a friend for 25.00. Yep, you heard right, 25.00. Put a set of 10.5:1 Jahn`s pistons in. Used a factory 350 h.p. 327 cam (hydraulic) I bought from a dealer parts department for 35.00. Put on a 360* Offenhauser manifold ($59.95)with a 3310 series Dual Line Holley @ 780 cfm (also $59.95), turned out to be way too much carburetion but I was young and learning as I went,and a set of Doug Thorley Headers. All this driving a Borg-Warner T-10 Close Ratio 4-speed (2.20:1 1st gear) and a rear-end setup using Zoom ring and pinion with 4.11:1 positrac. Turned low 14's at Famoso Drag Strip in Bakersfield, Ca. High performance was much cheaper back then.
In 1971 I bought a 1970 Chevelle Cowl InductionSS396 (365 h.p.) with a 4-Speed. Sold it after about a yearand bought a '71 454 'Vette with aTurbo 400.
In 1975 I bought a '68 Chevelle SS396 with a blown engine. I found a wrecked '66 Vette with an L-88 427 (425 h.p. with solid lifters), I used a Weiand manifold with a 750 cfm Holley'Double Pumper and HedmanHeaders,and put it in the '68 Chevelle. I built a Turbo 400 with beefed-up valve body and a manual shift kit for it. I ran a 4.11:1 Positrac. I also had it set up with individual Air Shocks in the rearindependent of each other so that you could pre-load it for drag racing to get a more even weight transfer and burnfrom left to right when you launch. Turned mid 12'`s at Famoso in California.
I recently built my youngest son a 383 stroker motor for his '79 Z-28. He told me he wanted something that would "Smoke the Tires". I put 10:1`s in it. Edelbrock "AirGap" manifold, 750 Holley "DoublePumper", I had an old "818" Duntov cam laying around so I used it, Hedman Headers, all drving a built Turbo 350 in front of a 3.90:1 posi. He got his wish. It will definitelysmoke the tires and then some.
I`m still driving Chevies after all these years. I now have a '96 Silverado 4x4. Pretty much stock except for the chip and custom wheels. Also have a 2001 GMC Yukon. Almost a Chevy.
